What's the easiest way to test an automation before going live?

Use separate test environments

Create a duplicate workflow for testing. Point it to test versions of your destination services (test spreadsheet, sandbox account, staging database). This keeps test data separate from real data.

Test with realistic sample data

Don't just send "test" or blank values. Use actual data formats your workflow will encounter. If you automate customer data, test with a real (but disposable) customer record.

Run manual test executions

Most platforms let you manually trigger a workflow with sample input. Do this several times with different scenarios: normal cases, edge cases (empty fields, very long text), and errors.

Check all steps, not just the outcome

View the detailed execution log. Watch what data flows through each step. Spot-check that transformations (text replacements, date formatting) produce correct output.

Verify integrations fully

Make sure data actually reaches the final destination. Don't assume an API call succeeded—log into the receiving system and confirm the data arrived and formatted correctly.

Start small in production

Once confident, run the live automation on a small batch first. Monitor the results closely. Scale up only after a few successful runs.
